A 6.2-magnitude earthquake shook a remote area of China's western Xinjiang yesterday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

It was followed by two aftershocks, measuring 4.8 and 3.0, Xinhua news agency reported.prada shoes online

The epicenter was said to be at a depth of 30 kilometers and in Keriya County in Hotan Prefecture. It struck at 6:47pm.

"A rescue team and other officials are now on the way to the earthquake zone, which is in a mountainous area," an official with the county's emergency office said.

The quakes occurred in unpopulated areas 5,000 meters above sea level and no casualties have been reported, Wang Qiong, an official with the Xinjiang earthquake bureau, told Xinhua.

People in the county seat of Keriya, 200 kilometers from the epicenter, could hardly feel the quakes, while people in Aqiang township and Pulu village, both 100 kilometers away, felt slight tremors, said Yang Shuying, a publicity official for the county.

The region is on the southern edge of China's vast Taklimakan Desert.

On Saturday, a quake measuring 5.3 hit Xinjiang, about 188 kilometers from the town of Shache, according to the US Geological Survey.
